Hi Marie

I don't have a definitive answer but I have heard lots of things like not letting anyone use the same towel as you etc. I think these are just scaremongering. I am sure that if it was a problem the rheummy team would have informed us. I will be interested to hear what other people have to say on the matter.

I agree with Sheila that this is most probably scaremongering - although it is wise to take the usual precautions ie washing your hands imediately after touching mtx etc etc. If someone is on very high doses of mtx to treat cancer, then I expect the guidelines would be different. My old man is still here 10 years on!!!

Hi Marie,

Is your friend of child bearing age?
If so she will have been told they must use protection because on no account should you conceive while taking mtx.

Marie

I have spoken to my RA team after being scared to death by the Home Care Visiting Nurses who showed me how to inject Methotrexate, Humira and Enbrel (yes I had to have three separate visits). These nurses generally deal with patients who are having Chemo. They warn you about double flushing toilets, not using the same towels etc.

My RA team have advised that chemo is in immensely greater doses than Methotrexate and, although you should be careful when injecting, you really don't have enough in your system to pass on to anyone else.

Take care

Jackie

Morning
thanks all, i was panicky that i could be slowly poisoning him and if i should up the insurance plan. the woman i was talking to was late 50's so well passed, and i am on 2 lots to stop any unwanted sprog. i was worried as arthur has a liver condition, but i have an appointment with gp on monday about the unwanted guest in the brain, so i will ask and let you know.
never been told about side affects but knew about the washing, wearing gloves and sharing towels as a nurse. will keep you posted marie xxxx

Hi Marie, I have never heard of this but I will ask my consultant next week when I see her, I have been on MTX for 4 years. Like the others have said I think it is just scaremongering. We take a tiny dose in comparison to those on chemo.

Take care Lorna x
